Neil Young: Heart of Gold (2006)

Neil Young: Heart of Gold, dir. Jonathan Demme. USA, 2006. 35mm, colour, 103 min.

Jonathan Demme is a filmmaker with an immense formal sensitivity to address several matters, whether fictional or documentary. Neil Young: Heart of Gold stands out right from its first images of Nashville that outline the urban surrounding when the musicians’ statements are framed in motion. The rest is an amazing concert with touching moments and emotive songs, filmed with a careful and subtle mise-en-scène. The points of view define what is happening on and from the stage as a ritual of intimacy; an intimacy that comes from the singer’s fragile voice and is intensified by his stories and by the rapport with his friends. The audience emerges as a faceless presence, in which the spectators of the film can project themselves. Thus, the concert (a celebration of life after the imminence of death) becomes an event for us as it was for those who were at the concert. Perhaps it is precisely this that makes the rendition of another song during the closing credits so right. Young is seated, playing a guitar and singing alone, before the empty stalls — but plays and sings as if they were full. [01.01.2010, orig. 04.2006]

Neil Young: Heart of Gold, real. Jonathan Demme. EUA, 2006. 35mm, cor, 103 min.

[01.01.2010, orig. 04.2006]
